MFL at BIRD’S BUSH

TEACHING MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN SCHOOL

At Bird’s Bush, we teach MFL using the Rigolo Language programme that allows pupils to learn sequentially through a range of exciting activities and interactive media to support children through their languages journey.

All teachers will use the resources of the Rigolo programme, which has planned units that the teachers will follow sequentially to build on vocabulary, confidence and skill. Teachers will use the pre-made PowerPoints, videos, songs and online interactive resources to plan and deliver quality French lessons.

The scheme follows a central storyline of an English family that has moved to France where they learn about life in another country and make new friends along the way.

The children will develop their speaking and listening skills through a range of conversational work, singing activities and games. This will develop their understanding and confidence so that they can begin to record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.

By the time the children leave Bird’s Bush Primary School, we want them to be able to read, understand, write and express themselves in early French so that they are prepared for the next level of their language education.

WHY IS FRENCH IMPORTANT TO OUR CHILDREN?

Year 3

So that when I am older, if I am on holiday I will be able to talk to the people in France. If we didn’t try to learn other languages, we might not be able to communicate with other people around the world.

Year 5

It is important that we learn French so that we can communicate with people in the world and potentially other family members that might not speak French. We should also learn other languages so that we can help other people that might not speak our language or ask for help if we are in France.
